I don’t even play this game…

So back in October or so, I was on my usual binge of ordering artisan keycaps (it’s gotten better since then, I swear!), and I saw that Hidden Lab had some new caps for sale/pre-order. One of them caught my eye, being their Q For Dragon keycap, which is an Overwatch inspired design. The description lists is as being “Made to order and will ship in January”, and while I’m normally impatient about pre-orders, I had a coupon code and poor money management, so I promptly ordered it.

Flash forward to today, and lo and behold, this shows up in the mail (after spending a healthy amount of time in Los Angeles doing whatever it is that international packages do when in Customs, it seems).

My first impression: hey, my keycap comes in an acrylic case shaped like a keycap! Neat!

I’m always a sucker for nice/creative/interesting packaging, so while being completely superfluous, it was a nice touch. I do believe Hidden Lab has stated that they may be selling these cases individually, but that was some time ago, and I don’t know if anything has become of it.

As for the cap itself, it looks to be made as well as the other caps that come from Hidden Lab. It appears to be a three-piece design, with a translucent green piece being sandwiched between the two other pieces of the design. The lines are fairly crisp and defined, and it appears to have a wash on it for panel lining (or it’s just dirty, who knows).

When put on a backlit keyboard, the green section glows evenly, with no shadowing from the stem that is often present in other backlit sculpted keycaps. The way the cap is designed, the forward-facing piece is actually the part that contains the stem, so nothing impedes any north placement LEDs.

After test fitting it on a few boards, it’s safe to say that like any other established artisan cap maker, the stem is well made, and allows for proper insertion and key travel, even on my Topre-clone board.

Overall, I’d have to say that I’m happy with this cap. This makes me want the HolyOOPS D.VA aluminum cap now to go with it.

Maybe one day I’ll play that Overwatch thing.

But not today.
