Every day is Christmas if you’re always buying stuff

My Fosen Aquamarine switches came in today from Switchtop.  As others have described, the click is lower pitched compared to other clicky switches, and the tactile bump is more pronounced. I’ll open one up later tonight to see if it can be Jailhoused or can take a fingercrusher spring.

Edit: got impatient, opened one up. They’re more of a pain to open because the top housing design means my top removal tool won’t work on them. J-Spacers don’t really do anything for them, so they’re destined to be clicky, which is ok with me.

Time to buy another Team Wolf to put these in, because I have more switches than I do boards at this point.

Being lazy about finishing this one

Filling a full-size Team Wolf Zhuque with fingercrushers. I won’t even link to this board, because it sucks, so instead, I’ll link you to a much nicer full-size keyboard with hot-swappable switches, the Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard. The short story is that they were originally working with Team Wolf to develop a full sized hot-swappable keyboard, but were unhappy with some design details, specifically, how the SMD leds made the switches sit. So, they parted ways, with the board at that particular stage in development being sold by Team Wolf as their Zhuque full-size board, and Glorious refining the design further to make their modular board.

The switches as mentioned, are fingercrusher 185g Jailhouse modded Gateron Greens. The keycaps are JTK Debut white on black (with DIY homing dots). The mods are GMK CMYW modifiers.

This question is a little less random. I’ve had a few people already ask “why fingercrusher?” and “what’s a fingercrusher?”. It’s the name of the site, after all. The quick answer is this:

This little bastard.

What is it? Specifically, it’s a modified Gateron Green switch. In more general terms, it’s what I’m calling a switch that has been modded to be much harder to press than any commercially available stock mechanical switch.

You start with a stock Gateron Green, which has an bottom-out spring weight of 80g, which means it takes 80 grams of force for the switch to travel it’s full top to bottom distance internally. The Gateron Green is already considered a “heavy” switch, as the more popular “blue” switch is rated at 55g, and the “red” switch is rated at 45g.

An 80g spring won’t do though, so next you open it up, and replace that spring with a 185g spring from switchTop (listed as being 150g+). Boom. Instant regret.

So why do it? What’s the point?

Late night nerding

Literally the only reason I would recommend those TeamWolf Zhuque boards you see on Amazon to anyone is if they try out a lot of switches, or just generally do a lot of dumb shit. Like me!

They’re kind of janky otherwise. The only thing of real value is the PCB itself, as both the plate and case are flimsy. Mine is actually filled with lead so it has a little more weight. I also am not a fan of Outemu switches, so I have lots of them just sitting around. I’ll probably do a giveaway or something with them at some point.

In case you’re interested in one for whatever reason, here’s my sellout link to Amazon to check it out:

In the process of putting together a Zhuque TKL for my friend because why not. More on that later.

Someone asked what the case is that I’m using to hold my artisans and novelty caps (as per my previous post). While there are some nice acrylic ones on sites like Taobao specifically for caps, and a few Redditors have 3D printed keycap stands that they sell (which I will get eventually), I just got something that someone suggested in a discussion thread, which is a storage box for daubers.

I don’t even play this game…

So back in October or so, I was on my usual binge of ordering artisan keycaps (it’s gotten better since then, I swear!), and I saw that Hidden Lab had some new caps for sale/pre-order. One of them caught my eye, being their Q For Dragon keycap, which is an Overwatch inspired design. The description lists is as being “Made to order and will ship in January”, and while I’m normally impatient about pre-orders, I had a coupon code and poor money management, so I promptly ordered it.

Flash forward to today, and lo and behold, this shows up in the mail (after spending a healthy amount of time in Los Angeles doing whatever it is that international packages do when in Customs, it seems).

What to expect:

Pictures and words about my (mis)adventures in mechanical keyboards, probably. I haven’t fucked with WordPress in ages, so I don’t know what the kids are into nowadays. For those that know me, it’ll probably be apathy, and I’ve wasted another thirteen bucks on a domain name that I’ll do fuck-all with.
